A

ASSY
①Abbreviation for assembly, as in assembly process. (i.e., ASSY process).
②Abbreviation for assembly, as in assembled units. (i.e., ASSY products).
ABC analysis
Called emphasis or priority analysis. Management of products and inventories in stages according A, B, C order of importance.

B

BM
Acronym for Breakdown Maintenance. Taking countermeasures in the event of a failure.

C

CPK
A process capability index that takes into account the deviation (Katayori in Japanese) of the average value in CP.
CT
Acronym for Cycle Time. The amount of time it takes to produce one unit of a product.
CP
Acronym for Process Capability Index.
COPQ
Acronym for Cost of Poor Quality. Total of wasteful costs due to poor quality.
CMS
Acronym for Chemical substance Management System. A production system・mechanism that prevents environmentally harmful chemical substances from being mixed into products.
CM
Acronym for Corrective Maintenance. Modifications that are made to extend the life of equipment and making it easier to maintain.
CFR
Acronym for Constant Failure Rate. Constant-type failure rate related to the failure rates of machinery and equipment.
CBM
Acronym for Condition Based Maintenance. Checking the state of deterioration and performing necessary repairs and replacements.

DFR
Acronym for Decreasing Failure Rate. Reduction-type failure rate related to the failure rates of machinery and equipment.

E

EMS
①Acronym for Environmental Management System.
②Acronym for Electronics Manufacturing Service. A service that engages in the contract manufacturing of electronic equipment and devices.
ECRS
Acronym for Eliminate, Combine, Rearrange and Simplify. The 4 principles of kaizen (continuous improvement). Most effective when conducted in the E→C→R→S order.

F Costs
Abbreviation for Failure costs. Costs incurred when non-conforming products are produced.
FTA
Acronym for Fault Tree Analysis. Tree analysis of machine and equipment failures.
FMEA
Acronym for Failure Mode and Effects Analysis. Analysis of failure modes and impact of machinery and equipment.

HACCP
Acronym for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point. A system that manages the ensuring of safety of all foods by identifying the harmful factors that affect food, and focuses on important control points.

ISO 9001
International standards for quality management systems with regards to ISO.
ISO 14001
International standards for environmental management systems with regards to ISO.
ISO
Acronym for International Organization for Standardization. A non-governmental agency that establishes international standards.
ISMS
Acronym for Information Security Management System. A system for managing information・confidentiality.
IR
Acronym for Inspection and Repair. Overhauling. Disassembling・inspecting and repairing defective parts on a regular basis.
IFR
Acronym for Increasing Failure Rate. Increase-type failure rate related to the failure rates of machinery and equipment.
IE
①Acronym for Industrial Engineering. Production engineering and work research in factories.
②Acronym for Internet Explorer.
IEC
Acronym for International Electrotechnical Commission. An organization that promotes international cooperation and understanding of standardization and conformity assessment in the electrical・electronic technology fields.
IATF 16949
IATF: Acronym for International Automotive Task Force. An international quality management standard for the automotive industry based on ISO 9001:2015 which was transferred from TS 16949.

Acronym for Job Relations. How to treat people (One of the programs that supervisors should acquire in TWI).
JS
Acronym for Job Safety. How to work safely (One of the programs that supervisors should acquire in TWI).
JQA
①Acronym for Japan Quality Award. A corporate awards system established in 1995 that evaluates "outstanding management systems".
②Acronym for Japan Quality Assurance Organization, a general incorporated association.
JM
Acronym for Job Methods. How to improve (One of the programs that supervisors should acquire in TWI).
JIT
Acronym for Just In Time. A production method that creates what, when and how much something is needed.
JIS
Acronym for Japanese Industrial Standards. National standards that establish standards for industrial products in Japan.
JI
Acronym for Job Instruction. How to teach work (One of the programs that supervisors should acquire in TWI).

K

KYT 4 round method
A method of dividing KYT (Kiken Yochi Training, or Hazard Prediction Training) into 4 stages and proceeding it in stages. Also referred to as KYT Basic 4R method.
KYT
Acronym for Kiken Yochi Training (Hazard Prediction Training). Training to anticipate hazards/dangers lurking in work and considering countermeasures.
KT method
Abbreviation for Kepner Tregoe method. A decision-making process based on rational thinking used in problem solving.
KKD
Acronym for Keiken (experience)・Kan (intuition)・Dokyo (courage), related to business promotion.
KPI
Acronym for Key Performance Indicator. An indicator which measures progress toward the final goal.
KJ method
Invented and named after by Jiro Kawakita (Kawakita Jiro in Japanese). A method of organizing・analyzing a large amount of information obtained by brainstorming, etc., written on cards, and sorting the cards into groups.
KGI
Acronym for Key Goal Indicator. An indicator for determining whether or not the final goal has been achieved.

LT
Acronym for Lead Time. The amount of time it takes from order to delivery, or the time it takes to complete the work.

M

MTTR
Acronym for Mean Time To Repair. The average amount of time it takes to repair a failed component or device.
MTTF
Acronym for Mean Time To Failure. The average amount of time that an item is expected to last in operation until it fails.
MTM system
Abbreviation for Methods Time Measurement system. A PTS system-type of indirect time setting in standard time setting.
MTBF
Acronym for Mean Time Between Failure. The average amount of time from one failure to the next during normal operation.
MP
Acronym for Maintenance Prevention. Equipment that does not require maintenance from the design stage.
MODAPTS system
Abbreviation for MODular Arrangement of Predetermined Time Standards system. A PTS system-type of indirect time setting in standard time setting.
MOST system
Abbreviation for Maynard Operation Sequence system. A PTS system-type of indirect time setting in standard time setting.

N7
The new QC 7 tools. 7 tools mainly used to solve problems with language data.

OSHMS
Acronym for Occupational Safety and Health Management System. A system for promoting safety and health management.
OJT
Acronym for On the Job Training. Education and training conducted on-site.
OHSAS
Acronym for Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series. International standards for occupational health and safety.
Off-JT
Acronym for Off the Job Training. Education and training conducted off-site, including group training and centering on lectures.
OEM
Acronym for Original Equipment Manufacturer. Companies that manufacture products under brand names of companies that ordered the production.

PTS system
Abbreviation for Predetermined Time Standards system. A method of breaking down and setting the times for basic human motions in order to set the standard time required to perform specific tasks.
PPM
Acronym for Parts Per Million.
PM
①Acronym for Productive Maintenance. Activities that maintain equipment and increase productivity most economically.
②Acronym for Preventative Maintenance. Taking measures before a failure occurs.
PS activities
Abbreviation for Product Safety activities. Activities that enhance product safety.
P-M analysis
PM: Acronym for Phenomenon・Physical, and Mechanism・Machine・Man・Material・Method. A way of thinking of physically analyzing chronic defect phenomena in accordance with theories・principles, and understanding the mechanisms by which they occur, in order to pursue their relevance with 4M (Machine, Man, Material, and Method).
PLP
Acronym for Product Liability Prevention. Activities to prevent product liability in advance.
PLD
Acronym for Product Liability Defense. Measures to reduce damages after an accident related to product liability.
PL
①Acronym for Product Liability. Causing damages for manufacturers when consumers suffer damages due to defects of products.
②Abbreviation for Profit and Loss statement, a type of financial statement.
PDCA cycle
Abbreviation for Plan・Do・Check・Act cycle. A method to perform work smoothly. Also referred to as the management cycle.

Q

QC story
Procedures for solving problems and achieving tasks that are utilized in quality control.
QMS
Acronym for Quality Management System.
QC process chart (table)
A chart (table) that defines the control characteristics and standards for each process when manufacturing a product.
QC
Acronym for Quality Control.
QC 7 tools
7 tools that are used to solve problems in quality control, such as cause and effect diagrams, check sheets, histograms, scatter diagrams, Pareto diagrams and graphs.

RWF system
Abbreviation for Ready Work Factor system. A PTS system-type of indirect time setting in standard time setting.

S

SW system
Abbreviation for Stop Watch system. A type of direct time setting in standard time setting. A method for calculating standard time by directly observing and measuring work.
ST
Acronym for Standard Time. A pre-set amount of time that a standard worker performs an operation in a standard way.
SDS
Acronym for Safety Data Sheet. A document for the safe handling of chemicals. Previously referred to as MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet).
SDCA cycle
Abbreviation for Standardize・Do・Check・Act cycle. A method for standardizing work to perform it smoothly.
SD
Acronym for Self Development (self-development). Improving/enhancing skills on your own volition.
SCM
Acronym for Supply Chain Management. A business management method that improves the efficiency of processes so that the ordering・purchasing・production・distribution・sales are all interconnected by a single chain.

TWI
Acronym for Training Within Industry. In-workplace training mainly for supervisors.
TS 16949
TS: Acronym for Technical Specification. An international quality management standard for the automotive industry.
TT
Acronym for Takt Time. The amount of time it takes to produce one product for the required delivery time.
TQM
Acronym for Total Quality Management.
TQC
Acronym for Total Quality Control. Company-wide quality control.
TBM
Acronym for Time Based Maintenance. Inspecting・replacing・repairing at regular intervals. Regular/periodic maintenance.
TPM
Acronym for Total Productive Maintenance. Production maintenance with the participation of all employees.

V

VRP
Acronym for Variety Reduction Program. A cost reduction method for the entire product group.
VA
Acronym for Value Analysis.
VE
Acronym for Value Engineering. Synonymous with VA. A method of increasing the cost and value per function.

W

WS system
Abbreviation for Work Sampling system. A type of direct time setting in standard time setting. A method of observing work at a pre-set random time and for a moment.
WF system
Abbreviation for Work Factor system. A PTS system-type of indirect time setting technique in standard time setting.

Z

ZD
Acronym for Zero Defects. Eliminating work defects and improving service quality.
